2012 mazda mazda5 review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. All-new, redesigned, new engines, low price. introductionthe 2012 mazda 5 is an all-new model. For comparison purposes, mazda uses the honda cr-v and the toyota rav4, which are not true minivans, since they don't use sliding doors as the mazda 5 does, and are generally $2400-$2800 more expensive.  using the patented mazda upside-down pentagon grille up front and the nagare or flowing design up over the front fenders and down the sides, the 2012 mazda 5 has been made to look much, much bolder and sportier than its predecessor, without the slab-sided approach usually reserved for minivan bodies. The body has a remarkably low coefficient of drag for a minivan, 0. 30, which helps with wind noise.  the new grille, hood, fenders, lamps, bumper and air intakes up front complement new body-colored door handles and mirrors, new taillamps, a mechanically operated liftgate, and new 16- and 17-inch wheels. All the seats have been redesigned to offer more long-trip comfort and durability.  but this is an economy minivan with a starting price under $20,000, so there is no blind-spot warning system, adaptive cruise control, or any of the other higher-priced safety gear. Mazda 5 sport comes with a 6-speed manual transmission, which mazda expects to be only about five percent of sales, with an optional automatic transmission 1000). There's a new upper and lower grille design, new hood, new fenders, new lamps, new bumpers and air intakes up front, with body-colored door handles all around, new taillamps, liftgate, and wheels.  the new mazda 5 has integrated halogen headlamps at the front corners, creating a line that goes up over the front fenders like other mazdas and then all the way to the rear of the car through the centerline of the body. The lower body is sculpted with an upswept line starting just behind the front tires and extending up and over the rear wheel wells. The second-row captain's chairs flop forward and slide for access to the 50/50 folding third-row bench seat, and there is hidden storage under each chair, not to mention a standard fold-out tray table and cupholder setup that fits between the two captain's chairs when needed.  the instrument package contains the usual two round gauges with lights and indicators in between the deeply tunneled clusters and is designed together with a second large, horizontal binnacle in the center of the instrument panel to house the time, temperature, fuel economy, sound system and climate control readouts, with the cd slot below, a very pleasingly laid-out sound system control center, and a three-dial hvac control panel at the bottom (automatic climate control front and rear air-conditioning with pollen filtration is standard equipment). The shifter, whether manual or automatic, resides in the bottom center of the instrument panel.  the three-spoke steering wheel has a thick rim and a thickly padded hub with convenient switches for the sound system on the left, cruise control system on the right, and telephone on the lower left. The engine performed smoothly and quietly.  the new front seats are comfortable, cosseting and supportive, with cool contrasting stitching on upper models. The second-row captain's chairs slide, recline and fold flat, opening up all kinds of passenger comfort and storage possibilities. The thick steering wheel is pleasant to hold onto, and the mazda 5 is made more comfortable with a combination of a tilt/telescope steering column and adjustable seat height. The six-speaker sound system sounded very good when the volume was cranked up.  the suspension underneath is conventional, with macpherson struts in front and a multi-link rear suspension, and in the redesign, the engineers have created quicker steering response, a much flatter ride through corners with quicker-acting shock absorbers, and faster-reacting, more progressive brake and throttle action that makes the mazda 5 more fun and more comfortable to drive quickly. The steering uses a combination of electric and hydraulic assist, and it feels connected to the tires and the road. Although the chassis is carried over from the 2010 model, the body has a larger d-pillar, more welds, wider metal overlaps and reinforcements in it for increased crash safety, which also aids in good handling. summarywe think the mazda 5 is interestingly slick and good-looking for a minivan with the new nagare design theme. Even with its relatively low power, it is fun to drive, gets decent but not class-leading fuel mileage, and it maneuvers well on its tight turning radius. In terms of size, it's actually five inches longer overall than the first minivans introduced by chrysler in 1984, so american families will find room for their stuff. On the road, it acts like a coupe with sporty driving dynamics and sparkling acceleration performance. The mazda6 delivers good fuel economy and it's attractively priced. Inside is a nice cabin loaded with convenience features. Mazda6 was last redesigned for the 2009 model year, and 2011 brought styling revisions and interior upgrades.  two engines are available. Mazda 6s versions get a 3. 7-liter v6. It cruises effortlessly on the open highway and works well around town with either transmission. The 6-speed manual is the sporty choice with closely spaced gear ratios.  the 3. 7-liter v6 makes 272 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, delivers extraordinary performance, and is epa-rated at 18/27 mpg. The v6 engine delivers loads of mid-range power and strong acceleration performance. We found it a delight to drive, with a 6-speed automatic mated to the most powerful v6 in the class.  mazda6 competes against an impressive group of midsize sedans. Among them: toyota camry, honda accord, chevrolet malibu, nissan altima, volkswagen jetta, hyundai sonata, kia optima. Those who fully enjoy and appreciate the driving experience may find the mazda6 the most compelling. Competitive pricing may seal the deal.  the mazda6 looks smaller and trimmer than other midsize sedans. And the mazda6 has just as much legroom in the back seats as the honda accord. We found the seating comfortable, front and rear. Leather upholstery is available in addition to the nice cloth that comes standard. We liked the navigation system and the stereo and we found everything easy to use. Visibility is very good.  sporty handling is this car's best feature. Each mazda6 model has its own calibrations for the same suspension system, and they tend to feel more buttoned down as price and engine size increase. A lot of the differences relate to tires. The v6 models on 18-inch wheels offer lots of grip but ride quality is a bit too firm for rough pavement.  overall, the mazda6 is an excellent choice for driving enthusiasts who want a practical midsize sedan. lineupmazda 6i sport 20,240) comes with cloth upholstery, air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, tilt/telescope steering wheel, 60/40 folding rear seat, six-speaker sound system, keyless remote entry, cruise control, and steering wheel mounted controls. The 6-speed manual gearbox that comes standard became a close-ratio unit in 2011. With its flowing roofline, wraparound overhangs that appear shorter than they are, classy grille and front fascia, and sleek lines overall, the mazda6 comes across as a smaller, trimmer, tidier car than some of its competitors.  the headlights are housed in sleek and stylishly shaped housings, each headlamp like a squeezed trapezoid or pea pod with pointy ends, inlaid on the graceful front fenders. An upper body crease that would normally go to the front wheel stops just shy of the fenders, and the rear wheel arches have double creases to mirror the front.  the mazda6 five-sided grille has a deep v-shape to it and it's all body-colored, except for the chrome winged mazda logo. The fog lights are set in horizontal openings surrounded by some light gray plastic and horizontal character lines in the air dam. The exception is the console trim that slashes across the passenger's dash which, on some models, appears a cross between silver-veined black granite and ash-black burnt wood with wide rings in it. It's a look we've not run across recently. It's a new cloth that was first appeared on 2011 models, but it's sporty and rugged like the previous material. Mazda has long been a leader in cloth upholstery. There is generous room inside, so even six-foot-plus bodies can sit in front and then jump in back without moving the front seat, even on cars with the moonroof. The hood slopes out of sight, common in this aerodynamic era. The roof pillars are not so wide that they obstruct vision; the outside mirrors are fairly low and so is the dashboard, all adding up to a good view out. Dash and cabin lighting are more than adequate with either set of gauges.  instruments are laid out with fuel and tachometer to the left, speed and coolant temperature to the right. Between the two are the odometers, outside temperature. When shifting an automatic manually the gear selected is shown above the odometers.  at top center of the dash is a deep red digital display for climate, radio and clock that's easily read by anyone in the car. Below it are center vents, the audio system or navigation if so equipped, and basic three-ring climate controls. Big omnidirectional round vents are on each end of the dash for ventilation. Lights and wipers are on stalks. Some secondary controls are to the left of the steering wheel next to a small storage tray. Redundant audio, telephony and cruise controls are on the steering wheel.  all the systems are simple to use. It can be a very helpful feature. We found it worked better on the mazda6 and caused fewer false alarms than similar systems we've tried on some other brands.  cargo space is one of the strong suits of the mazda6. With 16. 6 cubic feet of volume, the mazda6 is at or near the top of the class in cargo space.
